4711 Original Eau de Cologne

Perhaps the oldest and most well known product out of Cologne is the 4711 Echt Kölnisch Wasser (Original Water of Cologne). It stems from the recipe of a Carthusian monk’s which includes citrus fruit, rosemary and lavender, all of which are dissolved in a light alcohol mixture. The precise mixture is naturally held to be secret. 4711 was

constructed on the site of the firm Mühlens over 200 years ago, who, today, offers colognes and perfumes of many sorts. 4711 actually doesn’t belong such a list, because once is was identified with holy water. For Napoleon anno 1810 required the recipies for all doctor’s remedies to be disclosed, the water was renamed a perfume. 4711

still has the beloved and fresh effect today. The name 4711 comes from Cologne’s occupation by the French revolutionary troops, who, in 1796, numbered all of the houses in Cologne. One of theses hou- ses was numbered as 4711 nowerdays lying at Glockengasse that's still the postal adress today. And because the French soldiers loved to give the perfume as a gift back home, it got the name "Eau (Water) de (from/of) Cologne".

4711 is available in many souvenir shops, department stores and the 4711 main shop on Glockengasse across from the Opera. Internet: www.4711.com

Tips for Souvenirs from Cologne

COLOGNE CATHEDRAL AS A MODEL
Thank God, no visitor can take the Dom with him or her. No problem at all, for a lot of sou- venir shops sell Colo- gne's cathedral in a small size as a model in metal and different sizes, too.

KÖLSCH GLASS
"Kölsch" can be spo- ken or drunk. In the latter form, it's served in tall cylanderic glas- ses that are available with the favourite beer brand logos or pictures of the dom inscribed at large stores and the breweries' shops.

CARNIVAL'S HAT
There’s no festival in Cologne like Karneval. So what about a Carni- val's hat as a souve- nir? Some funny caps are sold at a couple of specialty stores, which offer different hats as well as wigs and costu- mes the whole year.

Antique Glasses as Stylistic Souvenirs

Cologne was a center for glass making at the times of the Romans. Some hundreds of glass artifacts, like a popular thin neck bottles or the expensive single pieces of the Diatret glass, are on display at

Cologne’s house of ancient history, the Roman-Germanic Museum. But the beautiful works of art don’t have to stay in the mu- seum because the museum gift shop and the CCAA Glass Gallery (near Breite Straße) offer original replicas of works that are in Cologne and throughout Europe priceless.

For your selection are shell-bowls, cups and carafes, which were pro- duced in the traditional Roman method. Next to leading the manufac- turing of the replicas, the CCAA Glass Gallery also makes modern glass, predominantly Unicat, which is finished by contemporary artists.
