University of Cologne
The University of Cologne was
founded in 1388 as the fourth insti- tute for higher learning in
the German Empire. The fore-runner was Al- bertus Magnus with
his general studies ("studi- um generale"), who was
the master and teacher of Thomas Aquinas. To- day, the
University of Cologne is the largest in Germany. At seven faci-
lities 63,000 students study, among other sub- jects,
medicine, philoso- phy, law and economics. World renowned
capaci- ties in research have taught and researched at the
University of Cologne, like the econo- mists Schmalenbach,
Gutenberg and Müller-Armack as well as the philosopher Max

University of Applied Sciences
From the initiative from
salesman Gustav von Mevissen, the City Com- merce School of
Cologne was founded in 1901, when it was a brand new
style of school. The pre- decessor is the modern School, or
moreover, university of Applied Sciences in Cologne, which was
created from a fusion of applied scien- ces and engineering
schools in 1971. With 45 majors in 10 facilities and with
18,000 stu- dents, the school is the largest of its style in
Germany. The paths of study for insurance fields,
photo-enginee- ring, agricultural engi- neering, restoration and

Music academy
Long before Cologne became the
media city, art and cultural festivals accompanied with musi-
cal production and per- formances were enor- mous in the city.
Follo- wing this tradition, Cologne
founded the State Academy for Music as a conservatorium in
1850. Today, with more than 1,800 students from every
imaginable corner of the globe, the Cologne Music Academy
belongs to the largest in Europe. Here, soloists singers and
with instru- ments, dancers, compo- sers and teachers learn

Art School for Media
Cologne as the German media
center continues its growth. So began Cologne’s first art
school for audio-visual media in 1990. In two or four years
the actors, desig- ners, authors and direc- tors will enter
the film and TV industry, in which media design, art and
science learning will be practiced. Among the professors are
counted Alfred Biolek, a famous German journalist, and
Hansjürgen Rosenbauer, modern artistic director of the ORB.

German Sport College
Whether soccer, ice hockey or
light athletics, Cologne is always there. That goes the same
for the science of sports. Cologne has the only sport
university in Ger- many, which was once begun in 1920 in Berlin.
The school consists of 21 institutes and 6,500 students. The
school educates professional athletes, teachers and
trainers to come in every sport imaginable. The school prepares the
fu- ture managers of the German Soccer (Foot- ball) League. A
