Just as in Rome, many routes lead into Cologne,
especially when one travels to the Domstadt (City of the
Great Cathedral) via train. It is a very practical
means, in that, the main train station is situated just
next to Cologne's primary Cathedral (der Dom), both of
which are located in the center of the city. When you
exit your train in Cologne,
take a few
minutes' time to relish the fresh air from the
Rhine and admire the great main platform of the
train station. Imagine, if you will, the train
station after its con- struction in 1859, when it
was the site of the Botanical Gardens now lying in Riehl, a
suburb of Cologne. Johann Jacobsthal
erected the train station's corridors in
1890 in the likeness of an im- mense greenhouse. It
stretches 255m (278 yards) long, is 92m (100 yards) wide
and towers 30m (278 yards) at the pinnacle. It's a tech-
nical
masterpiece. 1,200 trains travel in and out of the
main station daily, among which are the most modern
express trains: the ICE (Inter City Express) 3, the
Thalys and "Sprinter", which travel to and from
Amsterdam, Berlin, Brussels, Hamburg, London and Paris. The
Sprinter replaces the "Metropolitan" which was
a quite luxury train that linked Cologne with Hamburg in
only four hours. 200,000 people pass through the main station daily as
arrivals, departures or simply as a shopping
destination. That's because Cologne main station
has become a litte shopping mall lying underneath the
tracks. It will be clear to you when you
depart your train into the reception hall.

Shopping in the main station
Where that at one time luggage was stacked up now
serves to re- fresh business travelers and tourists before
and following their trip, meanwhile offering guests the
chance to pick up a souvenir. "Colona- den
Hauptbahnhof Köln" is a phrase used to name this
small shop- ping center with train connections. Not only
travelers, but also the locals from Cologne, casually
stop by and repose in the five corridors
of the station. 70 shops
environ the halls, among which include specialty
tea and ar- tisan cheese boutiques. Located in one
of the three newspaper stands is a small post
office; additionally, a savings bank with an
ATM/Cashpoint can be found at the Bres- lauer Platz
exit. The middle passage (the
"Markthalle" or bazaar) houses
a number of bistros and small restau- rants where one can
comfortably satiate their hunger with anything from
domestic würstchen and frikadellen over fish,
patế or pizza, to tandori chicken. And, of course,
the Colonaden does not fail to offer cafes, a bakery and
a supermarket. In the remaining passageways one finds,
to name a few, fashionable jewelry, a hair stylist, a
drug store and also a health food store; those desiring
new luggage will find it there too. A giant plus is the
hours of operation of the many businesses, where that,
even some bistros are open 24 hours a day, and for
everything else which one might wish for, the Colonaden
is open every day between 8am and 10pm.

"Colonaden" can be directed to the

CITY! Cologne
From station to the centre
... by subway
Relatively cheap and quick are
the subways, which travel to every part of the inner
city. When you get out of your train head towards the Dom exit
of the train station and take the stairs down to the left
(marked with a blue sign with a white "U" on it).
Downstairs there's a counter with in- formation about routes and
tickets. Info (tel.) 547-3333. more
... by taxi
More comfortable and often
faster are the taxis in Cologne. Taxi ranks are to the
right of the train station's Dom exit and to the left of Bres-
lauer Platz exit. A large number of the light yel- low cars are
available 24 hours a day. The price consists of a basic fee of
€2 and cost around €1.20 during the day and at night
€1.30 per km. Info and ordering at (tel.)
19440. On-line at: more
... by bus
From the main train sta- tion
the 132 line bus tra- vels in the direction of the Südstadt
(southern city) past Heumarkt and through the Severin’s
quarter to Chlodwigplatz. The buses are found on
the left side of the Dom exit of the train station under the
Dom sign and right of the Breslauer Platz exit of the train
station is the Bus stop, where buses that travel outside of
the city begin. Information at (tel.) 547-3333. more
... on foot
Above all, short distan- ces
with your luggage on arm is nothing if you want to walk to
your des- tination; depending on age and physical condi- tion, the
destinations up to Hohe Straße and Schil- dergasse, in the
Altstadt (olde towne), and to Neumarkt or Ebertplatz maximum
can be reached.
Service in the main station
Car rental
In the main train station
there are branches of the car rentals Avis, Europcar and Sixt.
They are found in the main passage on the left side of the
main entrance, across from the Travel Center
for the Deutsche Bahn (German Railway).
luggage lockers
Naturally there’s lockers in
the main train station for your luggage and other things. The
lockers are located in the last adjacent passage not far from
the Breslauer Platz exit. There are large lockers costing
about €1 or €3 per 24 hours. A locker may be occupied for
no longer than 72 hours. Then the train authority opens the
locker and picks up the contents. Further costs for retrieval in
such cases is €7,50.
Automatic luggage depository
An automatic luggage storage
is also available at the train station. Lug- gage and similar
things are simply placed into a metal bin and automati- cally stored in a dumb waiter so to speak and sent to
the cellar, all of which is fully automatic. It costs €2 per
24 hours. An advantage to the usual lockers is the un- limited
storage time. The machine prints out a coupon with a magnetic
strip, which is later used to retrieve the luggage. The
machine is located across from the Travel Center of the train
station.
Luggage store
Even more comfortable is
finally the personal touch of the luggage storage where you
can give your luggage over to an em- ployee of the station. Here
one can deposit re- gular luggage and bags up to 4 weeks and
bikes too. The fee for each piece of luggage is €2.05 and
€3.05 for bikes per day. You’ll find the per- sonal luggage
service at the large reception hall next to the perfumery
Douglas.
